Foreign Language Tutoring

Elementary School Level Foreign Languages - an increasing number of school districts across the country are making commitments to foreign language education for younger learners. Learning secondary languages helps increase listening ability, memory, creativity and critical thinking - all of which are thinking processes that increase learning in general.

Middle School Level Foreign Languages - many students could become more fluent and confident speakers of a new language if they start learning it in middle school rather than high school. It is widely agreed that students who begin learning a foreign language in middle school have greater oral proficiency and motivation than students with similar levels of language experience who start learning it in high school.

High School Level Foreign Languages - students starting a language at the high school level begin with level one learning. At this level, all five skills of language acquisition, reading, writing, speaking, listening, and cultural understanding, continue to be developed and assessed:
English as a Second Language (ESL) - a continuation of basic and advanced English communication, with further listening and speaking development. The formal skills of writing, reading, vocabulary and grammar progress, along the lines of everyday situations, interesting contexts, and the variety of material.

  • Spanish - high school students are introduced to the Spanish language in such a way that they learn the grammar as well as how to communicate orally in the language. Students advance their skills in the language to navigating through past and future tenses. Vocabulary grows as well as the ability to function in the language.
  • French - high school students learn basic and advanced French grammar, such as verb conjugation and adjective agreement and practice the basic skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing in the present tense, with an emphasis upon correct oral and written expression.
  • Italian - high school level Italian usually stresses the fundamentals of pronunciation, grammar, practical vocabulary, useful phrases, and the ability to understand, speak, read, and write simple language. Using fundamental sentence structures in the present and past tenses, we assist our students to practice speaking and holding simple conversations and writing compositions.
  • German - this is traditionally an elective course designed to develop world language skills and to prepare students for living in a global society. Instruction is designed to develop the ability to communicate in the German language by involving students in communicative tasks, which includes reading, writing, listening and speaking skills.
  • Modern Greek - our tutors seek to provide the student a firm foundation in the structure and vocabulary of the Greek language, with an aim to enable the student to read in Greek and verbally communicate effectively.
  • Russian - the goal of LRN tutors is to help students reach a high level of proficiency in the Russian language in an effort to develop the four skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking, with an emphasis on communicative competence.
  • Hebrew - LRN’s experienced Hebrew tutors provide an introduction to the language through advanced level Hebrew language and Israeli culture. Student activities are heavily based on active listening and speaking practice.
  • Mandarin Chinese - utilizing an audio-lingual approach, our tutors offer guidance in pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar fundamentals as essential elements in reading, writing, and understanding elementary Chinese. Furthermore, an emphasis is placed on necessary culture, customs, philosophy, and history which serve as primary keys to studying the Chinese language.
  • Portuguese - LRN coaches introduce or expand upon the fundamental elements of the Portuguese language within a cultural context. Emphasis is on the development of basic listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.
  • Japanese - introduce or develop a student’s knowledge of Japanese sentence structure, basic vocabulary, and the two Japanese phonetic characters of Hiragana and Katakana. Initially, it is important for the student to learn to hold short conversations, write about present and past actions, and understand important elements of Japanese culture and customs.
  • Korean - LRN tutors help introduce or reinforce elements of the Korean language by applying the natural approach and encouraging students to feel free to interact in Korean as naturally and as spontaneously as possible. Vocabulary skills, decoding skills, and fundamental sentence structures in the present and past, as well as pronunciation, grammar, and everyday vocabulary are stressed as indispensable tools for comprehension and expression.
  • Latin - the study of Latin exposes students to the language, culture and history of ancient Romans. LRN emphasizes comprehension of the Latin language by reading it and thus understanding the social and political history of the Romans. The result of a student’s study of Latin is improved knowledge of both English vocabulary and grammar, an expanded understanding of the relationship of the ancient world to his or her own, and appreciation of other foreign languages and cultures.
  • American Sign Language - a complete, complex language that employs signs made by moving the hands combined with facial expressions and postures of the body. It is the primary language of many North Americans who are deaf and is one of several communication options used by people who are deaf or hard-of-hearing.

University Level Foreign Languages - According to the 2003 National Survey of College Graduates, 81.5% of recent graduates who have mastered a foreign language by completing undergraduate coursework were employed (and 85.8% of them were employed full time). Moreover, employees are often paid more if they can speak another language. University level foreign languages of all varieties are designed to develop conversational skills at progressive levels.
